Vanessa Kirkpatrick is a poet, teacher, and writing consultant.  Her first collection, To Catch the Light (2013), won the inaugural John Knight Poetry Manuscript Prize and was Commended for the Anne Elder Award for debut collection. Her second collection, The Conversation of Trees, was published in 2017. Vanessa has a PhD in English Literature from the University of Sydney as well as a teaching qualification. She has extensive experience running workshops and mentoring in creative writing and poetry.

Publications in Australian and overseas print journals include the Australian Poetry Journal, Overland, Westerly, fourW, Antipodes, Sotto Magazine, OzArts Magazine, The English Chicago Review (England), Wordgathering (US), and Crannóg(Ireland).
