Writing Groups: Non-fiction

Back to all writing groups

Sydney Non-Fiction and Fiction Writing Group

The writing group’s aim is to help professional writers along their journey to be published or self-published. Ideally, members have already had their work published. Members must have a book concept that they are committed to working on and meeting regularly for the sake of continuity. Members must respect everyone’s work and come together in an enjoyable atmosphere.

The meetings will provide a safe space for constructive critique, sharing tips and strategies, information and resources regarding writing and publishing. Also, to offer support and motivation for writers to develop their work towards the goal of publication. The aim is to get the book published.

Women Writers Network

We are a combination of prose writers, poets, and playwrights. All at different levels of experience and expertise. All with the desire to become better at what we do. Our group includes women who have just begun to write – those who have had plays produced – novels, memoirs or poetry published – and those striving to be published. The emphasis is on constructive feedback in a friendly, encouraging, but dedicated environment, fostering all stages and all genres of writing. We meet weekly but attendance is flexible. There are usually eight to twelve women at any sitting. If you wish to read you’ll need to limit your prose to about 1000 words and have copies for us to edit as you read. Unless there is great financial hardship, we all put in a gold coin each week. And that’s it really. You are welcome to try us for size – see if we fit.

WriteStuff

We practice ‘raw’ or spontaneous writing. We each select one word from a selection of words and then write in any genre for 25-30 minutes. We then read our work aloud with the aim of encouraging and enthusing the writer by making positive and constructive comments. Our aims are to practice our writing, develop our skills and confidence; to be encouraged by the constructive criticism of our peers; and to use the weekly experience as a brain sharpening exercise.
