‘Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow.  The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.’ (Abraham Lincoln)

‘Who is more real?  Homer or Ulysses?  Shakespeare or Hamlet?  Burroughs or Tarzan’ (Robert A. Heinlein)

Strong characters are essential to effective creative writing—and if your characters are strong enough, they will do your writing for you (while you relax and have a cup of tea).  In this one-day course, we will discuss and practise techniques for creating characters that leap from the page.   We will focus on how to draw on life, dreams and memories; how to complicate and develop your characters (so that they have both ‘tree’ and ‘shadow’); how to surround them with a support cast (and extras) who are more than cardboard cut-outs; and how to coax them onto their true path.

The aim of the day will be for you to go home with your own multi-dimensional characters: characters who, in time, should be even more famous than you…

Food
Tea and coffee making facilities will be provided. Course participants are advised to bring their own lunch as there are no cafes within easy walking distance.

Student Requirements
Lots of paper and pens; laptop if desired.
