Travel writing has spawned categories and sub-categories, but the travel novel has increased in standing as serious literature. More than a memoir, an exceptional travel novel is a distinct blend of the personal, the novel and the cultural, defined by the clarity of the writer’s voice and language, and the wit of observation.

Brendan Shanahan shows you the fundamentals of the travel novel, sharing some of the ‘rules’ and how to use or subvert them, as well as tips on rigorous editing and the question of ethics. Learn how to build narrative, draw memorable characters, and define the difference between a journal entry and a travel story. Sharpen your perception and writing skills to create narrative travel writing that stands alone as literature.

Food
Tea and coffee making facilities will be provided. Course participants are advised to bring their own lunch as there are no cafes within easy walking distance.
