The He(art) of Romance Writing takes you into the heart of the world’s biggest-selling genre. Valerie Parv, has sold nearly 30 million books in 26 languages, and says romance novels are far easier to read than they are to write. Yes, the hero and heroine share an attraction from first meeting, but how do you keep millions of readers turning pages to find out if these two achieve their happy ending? The answer lies in the unique roles of dialogue, viewpoint and characterization in the romance genre. Whether you’re writing for print, ebooks or a combination; and intending to publish with traditional publishers or independently, these elements remain key.

During the workshop you will have the chance to bring half-page samples of your own work to be read and discussed as time permits, enabling you to identify how the elements relate to your writing and that of others in the group. The mix of information, discussion and enjoyable writing exercises will send you back to your computer fired up with as much passion for your novel as your characters have for each other.

Expected learning outcomes:
At the completion of the workshop, participants will be able to identify the three key elements of a successful romance novel and be able to use them effectively in their own writing.

Food
Tea and coffee making facilities will be provided. Course participants are advised to bring their own lunch as there are no cafes within easy walking distance.

Student Requirements
Optional – participants are invited to bring for group discussion as time permits:

– a half-page double-spaced example of dialogue they’ve written OR

– a half-page double-spaced scene introducing their hero or heroine

These samples may be written for the workshop or taken from a work-in-progress. Please bring 15 copies of your sample.
