Perhaps you are a fiction writer, wanting to show your characters’ spiritual, as well as their emotional and practical lives? Or perhaps a poet, seeking to infuse your language with the numinous lifeforce? Or a playwright, bringing to life ancient characters from myth and fable? Maybe you write instructional, descriptive or biographical non-fiction, and are searching for practical ways to write about the intangible – or you just want to branch out!

Writing convincingly of spiritual experiences – whether in a poem, novel, memoir or article – can be as complicated as writing about sex. How is it possible to avoid coming across as trite, incomprehensible or slightly touched? This workshop will investigate different doorways into writing the sacred; experimenting to create fresh, inviting writing in this very personal realm.

Jane Meredith will guide students through a number of different styles, approaches and formats for writing on the sacred. Jane will look at Writing from inner stillness; writing from nature; stepping inside the mythos and writing sacred narrative; explanatory and instructional writing from a spiritual perspective.

The workshop will include discussion of, and experiment with different techniques learnt from the examples to find what works best when writing about the sacred and spiritual.

Food
Tea and coffee making facilities will be provided. Course participants are advised to bring their own lunch as there are no cafes within easy walking distance.

Student Requirements
Please bring a few lines (up to a paragraph) of sacred or spiritual writing that inspires you to the workshop (this could be from a spiritual text, a poem, novel or self-help book).
