Do you have a beautiful picture book in you trying to find its way onto the page and into the world? Let Hilary Bell, author of bestselling Alphabetical Sydney, help you lure it out into the open.

The course is divided into two parts: a detailed overview of the creative process, illustrated through examples of attempts, rejected verses, and the building of images, followed by hands-on exercises where participants test their own ideas. Hilary will describe her experiences of making picture books from concept stage through to publication, including a work-in-progress, and discuss her collaborations with different illustrators.

We’ll look at a range of successful picture books and investigate what it is that makes them special. Guest speaker Matthew Martin will discuss his career in illustration, including his work with Hilary on The Marvellous Funambulist of Middle Harbour, which is on the Premier’s Reading Challenge list.

As well as gaining insights into the creative and practical aspects of creating picture books, participants will leave with an appreciation of fresh and surprising picture book structures, and techniques for finding ideas from the world around us. And perhaps even the beginnings of a new and unique picture book.
