In this hands-on workshop, award-winning writer and academic Eliza Henry-Jones will take you through the ways that historical events, people and ideas can be researched and explored in contemporary fiction.

Eliza will share on her own experiences of drawing on the 17th century Scottish witch hunts in her latest contemporary novel, Salt & Skin. This workshop will also look at various contemporary works that draw on the historical, and consider the responsibilities of the writer.
The workshop will include practical information and examples, advice on developing a research action plan, in-class activities, and exercises to take home.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
- Identify some historical events, people or places that haunt them
- Develop a basic action plan for further research
- Understand various practical ways – through exercises and examples – that the historical can be explored in contemporary fiction.
