For our monthly Writing On Our Calendar feature, we bring you a round-up of literary events happening in Sydney and around NSW. Check out some of the writing events and programs in 2024 this November(and the last few days of October)! 


28 October – 6 December: Online: Writing Memoir (Online)
Join this online memoir writing course with Kate Holden. In a big life, where is the story? Everyone has not just one story but thousands. Somewhere in your many years, encounters, lessons and relationships is the tale you need to tell. It may be sad, it may be joyful, complicated or simple, it might be just for you or it might be a story lots of people can share.

30 October – 17 November: The Kingdom of Eucalypts (Bondi Beach)
This new Australian play by Alice Spigelman explores the life of Miles Franklin following her success of writing “My Brilliant Career”. As Australia recovers slowly from the depression and the ravages of war, how does the writer, Miles Franklin, author of “My Brilliant Career” reestablish herself back into Australia?

1 November: Nakku Dharuk The Bark Petitions (Warner Bay)
Join Professor Clare Wright in conversation with Associate Professor Julie McIntyre as they discuss Wright’s book ‘Naku Dharuk The Bark Petitions’. ‘Naku Dharuk The Bark Petitions’ is the story of a founding document in Australian democracy and the trailblazers who made it. 

1 November: Culture Club: Poets Society Poetry Reading (Maitland)
Join the Culture Club’s Poets Society to see local poets share poems. If you are a poetry lover feel welcome to share your own, make connections and be inspired by creativity. Bring your poem and a pillow to relax into the evening.

1 – 3 November: Blue Mountains Writers’ Festival (Blue Mountains)
Inspiring readers and writers alike, our packed three-day program celebrates the best of Australia’s literary landscape: joyful, thought-provoking and thrilling opportunities to connect with the written word, and each other. Weekend and day passes, workshops and special events are on sale now.

2 – 3 November: Book Fair Australia (Sydney)
Book Fair Australia presents a literary festival that celebrates stories of all genres. The weekend will be jam packed with activities. We welcome traditionally and independently published authors alike to share their diverse range through dedicated stalls, discussion panels, workshops and more. A thrilling weekend fit for any book lover, come by with friends and family to get your books signed and explore a world of storytelling right in Sydney.

3 November: Sydney Authors Inked Presents: Free Book Talks (Summer Hill)
We have another fabulous event lined up for Sunday 3 November with two incredible authors in conversation with us – Ashley Kalagian Blunt, author of the chilling crime novel, Dark Mode and Lisa Creffield, a multi-talented writer who has published novels under several pen names.

9 November: Rick Morton’s Mean Streak (Kyogle)
Kyogle Readers and Writers is inviting one of Australia’s best long-form journalists, Rick Morton to discuss his new book Mean Streak at the KMI Hall in Kyogle on November 9th at 2pm. Rick will be joined on stage by Walkley and Miles Franklin winning writer and academic, Melissa Lucashenko for a very special one on one conversation.

11 – 21 November: Dymocks Author Events (Sydney)
Upcoming author events from Dymocks featuring Gina Chick (11 Nov), Lech Blaine (12 Nov), Pat Cummins (14 Nov), and Glenn Maxwell (21 Nov).

14 November: National Youth Poetry Slam ft. DOBBY (Sydney)
Bankstown Poetry Slam is proud to present the second annual National Youth Poetry Slam. You will be mesmerised by the realest rhymes and mic-drop worthy metaphors as the 20 passionate young poets battle it out for the coveted NYPS crown and a sweet $1500 cash prize. Join us for this evening of inimitable poetic storytelling with some of the most passionate storytellers hailing from all over Australia!

15 – 17 November: True Story Festival (Coledale)
Returning to Coledale for its third year, True Story Festival is a showcase of some of the best creative non-fiction writing in Australia today. Workshop, film screening, and early bird day pass tickets are now on sale until 1st November. From 1st November, single session tickets will also be on sale, subject to availability.

29 November: Local Authors Book Festival (Sydenham)
Come and join us for a book-themed cocktail evening. Food and drinks are free. Meet local authors, and buy signed copies of their books. They make the perfect gift for your loved ones at Christmas! 

30 November: Bread & Butter Poetry Slampionship 2024 (Marrickville)
Bread & Butter Poetry Slam is the Inner West’s newest, most oven-fresh poetry night! Join us every last Thursday of the month* for poems, feelings and laughs in a safe and inclusive space.
