NSW has a thriving literature sector that helps shape our collective identity, contributes new ideas and innovation to our creative industries and economy, and supports a diverse community of writers.

Writing NSW Position on Human Rights and Freedom of Expression

We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Nations storytellers of this land. Their stories, cultures, and voices are integral to Australia’s literary landscape. Writing NSW is committed to amplifying and supporting First People’s right to share their histories and perspectives in ways relevant to them and their communities.

Writing NSW is committed to fostering a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive literary community. We recognise the vital role of writers in exploring complex issues, fostering dialogue, and capturing the full spectrum of human experience, especially those marginalised or silenced.

We affirm that freedom of expression is a fundamental right. We also acknowledge that it comes with responsibilities. Expression must include respect for safety, dignity, and freedom from harm. When presenting writers and their work, we aim to provide context that fosters empathy, understanding, and open-mindedness. Celebrating diverse voices, however, does not equate to endorsement of all viewpoints by Writing NSW.

As an organisation that supports writers from all backgrounds, we are deeply concerned about the harm caused by global conflicts and human rights violations. War, displacement, and violence profoundly affect writers, artists, and communities—including those in Gaza, Ukraine, and beyond. We stand in solidarity with all who work to protect human rights, including cultural expression and freedom of expression.

We oppose all forms of discrimination and racism, including Islamophobia, antisemitism, and hate speech. We oppose efforts to silence writers based on their identity, perspectives, or creative expression. A just and equitable literary landscape must protect the rights of all writers, ensuring diverse voices and lived experiences are heard, valued and told in their own words.

Our challenge and commitment is to create shared spaces where writers can engage with provocative or uncomfortable ideas while ensuring these spaces remain inclusive, respectful and safe for all participants. Writing NSW will continue to champion diversity, inclusion, and creativity, providing space for writers to share their stories—free from censorship, discrimination, or professional repercussions, and with respect for the human rights and dignity of all.
