Street libraries are a new twist on a not-so-new concept: making books available in a public space for others to take and share. The Street Library project aims to improve, promote and spread the practice by helping people build eye-catching public spaces to house the transient books and by promoting the libraries through an online registry.

Would you like your own street library? Do you live in Western Sydney? We’re looking for a member in Western Sydney keen to get involved with the street library project. Here’s the deal: we give you the street library, and you let loose your creative side painting it (paint helps to waterproof the wood). Then, put it in your neighbourhood, register it on streetlibraries.org and tell everyone about it. The Centre will help to promote the library and also give you ongoing access to our second-hand book collection to keep your library stocked!

This street library is number 25, in honour of the 25th year of the NSW Writers’ Centre.

Sound like the project for you? Email us to tell us why you’re keen to get involved.
