Pathways to Publication is a dedicated information session for writers from diverse cultural backgrounds and influence seeking publication or wanting information about options for publication.

On Thursday 19 March 2026, Kavita Bedford (Friends and Dark Shapes), Natasha Rai (An Onslaught of Light), and publisher Robert Watkins joined Shankari Chandran (Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens) to discuss the many routes to publication, navigating barriers, and building supportive networks.

The panel was a warm and insightful conversation, attended by a community of enthusiastic writers in person at Callan Park and online. The writers shared their varied experiences as authors negotiating the publishing world, and Robert reflected on the importance of reading and championing new Australian stories, balanced with the sometimes difficult ‘business’ of publishing.

The audience was brimming with questions about everything from international publishing to agents and self-editing.

After the panel, attendees and panellists enjoyed nibbles, tea, and coffee while reflecting on their own journeys. The generosity of the panellists resulted in a supportive and warm evening, filled with community and inspiration.
