Wanting to make sure you smash those writing goals for 2019? We’ve got a ton of events and competitions happening in March to keep your inspiration alive as we move into the colder months!


Tuesday 5 March: Deadline for the South Coast Writers Centre annual International Women’s Day writing competition. Open to individuals with a lived experience of womanhood, accepting short works of prose (up to 750 words) or poetry (up to 40 lines) on the theme of “progress.”

Wednesday 6 March: Deadline for the Booranga Writers’ Centre, Inaugural International Women’s Day Art and Literature Prizes. Open to female contributors Australia wide. Email cootawattlebird@gmail.com for entry form and more information.

Wednesday 6 March: Monica Tan’s Stranger Country Book launch. Find out what happens when a 32-year-old first-generation Aussie woman decides to give up her dream job and walk 30,000 kilometres across the Australian outback in her quest to find out where she truly belongs. Join Monica Tan in conversation with Bridie Jabour and Mariko Smith at The Vanguard, Newtown at 6.30pm. Click here for tickets and more information.

Friday 8 March: Deadline for Anne Elder Award, a national, annual award for a sole-authored first book of poetry of at least 20 pages, published in Australia. Open to books published between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018.

Friday 8 March: International Women’s Day: Power Voice for Balance hosted by the South Coast Writers’ Centre. Anne-Louise Rentell, Aunty Barbara Nicholson and Ali Jane Smith will share their experiences of working on The Siren Project, a theatrical and musical re-imagining of women’s stories from Port Kembla. Wollongong Art Gallery at 11am.

Saturday 9 March: Halfway Print Fest, a festival celebrating independent publishing, bringing together zine-makers, bookmakers, writers, designers and artists from the region and surrounding cities. Thirsty Crow, Wagga Wagga.

Monday 11 March: Deadline for Woollahra Digital Literary Awards. The Award accepts submissions of a literary nature that are published online or in an electronic form.

Tuesday 12 March: Poetry Night at Sapphos Books, Café and Bar in Glebe. Poetry nights are held on the second Tuesday of every month and have become renowned for their welcoming atmosphere and line-up of well known poets including Les Murray, Gig Ryan, David Malouf and Judith Beveridge. The night usually features three or four poets reading their own work, followed by open mic readings.

Wednesday 13 March: I Hate Networking Event with Monica Davidson. Consider networking to be a sweat-inducing nightmare experience? Come along to this event to learn all about networking in a safe and friendly environment where you will be able to practice some networking skills with like-minded people. Grafton Regional Gallery, Grafton at 5.30-7.30pm. Tickets $10

Thursday 14 March: Time Management for Creatives with Monica Davidson. Struggling to find the right balance between work, creative pursuits and a social life? This fun and informal workshop discusses practical strategies to help you have it all. Ignite Studios, Ballina at 10am-1pm. Tickets $49

Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 March: The 2019 Jugiong Writers’ Festival, “Dare to Dream, Down the Track.” A unique biennial Writers’ Festival celebrating reading and writing in the picturesque village of Jugiong. Click here for the Festival Program

Thursday 28 March: Murray Arts Writing Workshop, Pitch Perfect: How to Pitch your Ideas with Ben Gilbert. The Cube, Wodonga at 2.30-5pm. Email info@murrayarts.org.au for more information

Thursday 28 March and Friday 29 March: Screenworks on tour: a series of masterclasses on documentary, drama and pitching your production. Civic Theatre, Burns Way, Wagga Wagga. Tickets $37.50-$75.

Sunday 31 March: Deadline for submissions to Eucalypt, issue 26. Open to writers Australia wide, accepting previously unpublished poems.
