Writers On Writing / Jess Black on creating great characters for kids

“You’ll always have moments within a manuscript of feeling stuck but just to push through. In fact, that’s often when the magic happens.”

Writers on writing Jess Black

How did you get into writing for kids?

I have always written for kids in a variety of forms – theatre and television. My background in television led to being offered to write the Bindi Wildlife Adventure series and it all snowballed from there.

What’s the best tip you’ve received as a children’s author?

That you’ll always have moments within a manuscript of feeling stuck but just to push through. In fact, that’s often when the magic happens.

Where do you gain inspiration for your books?

My family and my everyday life.

Why is character so important in children’s books?

Character and their desire drives story. Without character there is no story!
