Fill your October with these wonderful writing events. There’s a range of online events to keep you going as we (slowly) exit lockdown including Booktober, online conversations about all things writing, workshops, a ground-breaking opera film and more!


October: Booktober!
Booktober is quite simply an annual event held during the month of October encouraging people to read more books! Start reading this Booktober – sign up as a bookworm and fundraise to help disadvantaged kids within the Greater Western Sydney region. Find out more here.

1 October: Online: First Friday Club with Dr David Roland
It can be hard to feel resilient as a writer at the best of times, but with a global pandemic and time spent in lockdown, mental health can take a hit. In October we invite you to join our online event with Dr David Roland to discuss matters of mental health. Find out more here.

1 October: In Conversation with Dr Michael Mohammed Ahmad & Amani Haydar
In their Virtual Festival, The Right Pen Collective is hosting two amazingly talented Australian Muslim authors: Dr Michael Mohammed Ahmad and Amani Haydar. Join TRPC as they discuss the writing experience as Muslim writers in Australia, Muslim representation in adult contemporary fiction and their journey to publication. You will have a chance to interact with special guests at this event. Find out more here

2 October: TRPC Virtual Festival: Official Closing with guest Waleed Aly
The Right Pen Collective will be closing their virtual festivities with Australian writer and TV celebrity Waleed Aly. Waleed will be in conversation with Co-Founder of TRPC Annie McCann, discussing his experience as a Muslim writing and presenting in Australia. You will have the chance to interact with a special guest. Find out more here.

30 September – 3 October: National Young Writers’ Festival
The National Young Writers’ Festival (NYWF) is an annual gathering of young writers. A place to show work, share ideas, and learn. Their programs are free, and made by and for young writers who create across stage, page, web and beyond. In 2021, They are returning with a hybrid model; retaining a digital program that will exist alongside the usual festival which takes place across the October long weekend in Newcastle, NSW. Find out more here.

7 October: Pinchgut Opera – A Delicate Fire Livestream
A ground-breaking 60-minute opera film, featuring music by the great 17th century composer, Barbara Strozzi. Celebrating the joys, vicissitudes and triumphs of love this sumptuous musical experience provides an intimate and immersive view of the beauty and power of Baroque opera and vocal music set against the glittering chiaroscuro of members of the Orchestra of the Antipodes. 7 October: Embracing Hopefulness during COVID-19
The Transcultural Mental Health Centre is inviting participants from culturally and linguistically diverse communities to join a series of 2 hour online poetry workshops using Microsoft Teams. The theme for the poetry workshops is ‘Embracing Hopefulness’ during COVID-19. Find out more here.

12 October: Jonathan Franzen: Crossroads
This online conversation is brought to you by Newcastle Writers Festival. Celebrating the release of the highly anticipated novel Crossroads, this online event will be hosted by ABC Radio’s Sarah Kanowski. Franzen will discuss family, America, and where the modern novel must go from here. Find out more here.

30 October: Beyond the Rules of Writing, with Dario Ciriello
Presented by New England Writers’ Centre, in this workshop you’ll learn what readers – the ones who actually plonk down money for your book – really care about. Join author and editor Dario Ciriello for a fun, eye-opening, and iconoclastic workshop on developing and nurturing your own unique writing talent, all the way to making that hard choice between indie and trad publishing.
