News / Writing NSW announces successful culturally diverse publishing interns

The program is one of three initiatives designed to increase cultural diversity in writing and publishing offered by Writing NSW with funding from Create NSW.

Writing NSW is delighted to announce the three successful applicants to its new program of paid internships in the publishing industry for emerging editors from culturally diverse backgrounds.

The program is presented in partnership with publishers, Giramondo, Hachette, and Pan Macmillan and with Diversity Arts. It is designed to help the emerging editors take the first steps in a publishing career with the aim of increasing cultural diversity in the publishing industry.

The selected interns, who will complete a six-month internship and development program with their allocated publisher, are:

Lucia Tuong Vy Nguyen – Giramondo

Katherine Wong – Hachette

Jodie Ramodien – Pan Macmillan

The participating publishers noted the exceptional number and quality of applications, which demonstrated the need for more opportunities such as this. The successful applicants were selected by the publishers for their potential to develop a career in the publishing industry. They are all deeply engaged in the writing community, with experiences as authors, journalists, and editors of student publications.  In their work they have all demonstrated a commitment to fostering diversity in the industry.

‘Hachette Australia is delighted to be welcoming Katherine Wong as our intern in 2022,’ Hachette Group Publishing Director Fiona Hazard said. ‘The impressive standard of the applications highlights the importance of and need for a program like this which makes real connections between talented emerging editors and trade publishers. Here at Hachette, we are confident that this opportunity will be the bridge the interns need to embark on professional editing careers in trade publishing.’

The three emerging editors will also be supported by an external mentorship program, led by Beatrice Davis fellow Radhiah Chowdhury. The internship program will run February – July 2022.

The program is one of three initiatives designed to increase cultural diversity in writing and publishing offered by Writing NSW with funding from Create NSW. The other two initiatives are a mentoring program for emerging writers and a mentorship program for curators of the Boundless Festival.
