First Friday, our monthly conversation with an industry professional, is a chance for our community to learn more about the writing and publishing industry. This April, we invite you to our online event with Anne-Marie Te Whiu, editor of poetry anthologies Woven and Solid Air, and former co-director of the Queensland Poetry Festival.

Anne-Marie will be joining Membership and Operations Coordinator Elliot Cameron to chat about the state of poetry publication in Australia, and how to make a career as a poet and editor.

This event starts online at 12:30pm, via Zoom, and will run for 60 minutes. If there is time, we will take audience questions at the end. Free and open to members and non-members, but RSVPs are essential.

Anne-Marie Te Whiu (Ani) an Australian-born Māori who belongs to the Te Rarawa iwi in Hokianga, Aotearoa NZ.  She lives on unceded Gadigal and Wangal land. She is a cultural producer, writer, editor and weaver. Most recently she has edited Woven (Magabala Books), Tony Birch’s Whisper Songs (University of Queensland Press), Bebe Backhouse’s More Than These Bones (Magabala Books) and Solid Air: Australia & New Zealand Spoken Word (University of QLD Press) which she co-edited. Her writing has been published broadly across Australia and Aotearoa including Cordite, Australian Poetry Journal, Rabbit Journal, SBS, Open Books SLNSW, Tupuranga Journal, Another Australia anthology and more. Between 2015 – 2017 Ani co-directed the Queensland Poetry Festival, and she is a co-producer of the Writers Program for the Aotearoa New Zealand International Arts Festival (Wellington – February 2024). She was a 2023 Carriageworks ClothingStores Studio Artist recipient and in 2022 she was a recipient of The Wheeler Centre’s Next Chapter program. She is also currently a curator of the First Nations Queer Languages exhibition which will open with QTOPIA in February 2024. Ani’s forthcoming debut poetry collection titled Mettle will be published by University of Queensland Press.
