Writing for children can be fun and rewarding but mostly it is hard work and a lot of practise. Join children’s author of 28 books, Deborah Abela, as she takes you through a practical, hands-on day of writing activities to hone the skills you need to write for kids.

We’ll be looking at getting started, finding the right voice and honing your ideas. We’ll play with creating characters who feel real and dialogue that rings true, as well as plotting and the joy of editing. We’ll explore structure and plot, how to ward off writers’ block, the importance of being part of a writing community and a little about the wonderful world of the children’s publishing industry.

Deborah loves what she does and is keen to share her experiences and insights about this specialised and incredibly exciting profession. You may like to work on new ideas during this workshop, but you are also welcome to bring projects you are working on.
