This writing course about drawing inspiration from the visual takes place at Writing NSW in Sydney.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words but without the right tools and language, it can be difficult to articulate what a visual image, such as a work of art, is saying. This one-day course provides aspiring and emerging writers with techniques for thinking and writing about visual art and opportunities to engage with visual aids to improve their writing. Through a series of case studies, exercises and prompts, participants will gain an understanding of the interplay between visual art and literature. They will learn how to draw inspiration from paintings, objects and photographs to build vivid imagery and tell stories effectively. The course covers a wide range of literary devices, methods and terminology for interpreting and writing about art.

Sharing her own experience in establishing and sustaining a multidisciplinary creative practice, award-winning writer and visual artist Amani Haydar will provide participants with practical advice and ideas about using art for inspiration and self-reflection throughout the writing process.
