Myth, fairytales and folklore are the foundations of any storytelling culture and have been used within modern genres as diverse as cosy mystery, romantic comedy, urban fantasy and action/adventure—for both adults and children.

In this one-day workshop, facilitated by author and story developer Gabiann Marin, you will explore the history and the foundational theories of mythic and fairytale writing to develop your own unique fairytale or folkloric storyline, character or structure—as well as finding ways to incorporate these elements in your writing to enhance your other writing projects.

Expected learning outcomes

In this workshop, participants will:

  1. Deepen their understanding of the principles and foundations of fairytale structures
  2. Learn the distinctions within the fairytale genre between myth, fable and folklore story types
  3. Have the opportunity to explore ways in which these elements could be applied within their own writing to deepen the impact and emotional reach of their storytelling
  4. Develop their feedback skills through work shared in class.

This workshop takes place at Writing NSW in Sydney.
