Point of view is one of the most important techniques in fiction writing, and one of the most neglected. Get it right from the start, and you’ll be able to construct narratives where voice, character and story work seamlessly together. Get it wrong though, and you might find yourself having to completely rewrite or, even worse, throw away large amounts of material.

This one-day workshop with Anthony Macris will help you understand the full potential of first and third person points of view, and how to avoid common pitfalls in their use. Participants will learn how to use first person in ways that develop voice and perspective, and that allow a broad range of characters to share centre stage. The two most commonly used (and misused) modes of third person narration – omniscient and subjective – will be looked at, as well as the tricky art of having multiple third person narrators in a single story.

This workshop aims at demystifying point of view technique and helping you get on with giving readers what they want: well-structured stories with vibrant characters and clearly articulated voices.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  1. Ability to use first person narration in voice and story modes
  2. Understanding of differing types of third person narration
  3. Understanding of the relationship between point of view, character and story structure
