This writing course, Screenwriting Fundamentals with Chris Phillips, will be held at Writing NSW in Sydney.
In an age of limitless streaming platforms, Letterboxd, and ‘bingeable’ content, writing for the big or small screen is not what it used to be. For aspiring and emerging screenwriters, it’s a competitive and ever-changing landscape. This course will show you how make your story concept shine, develop fundamental screenwriting skills, and gain a unique insight into the world of film and television.
Participants will examine a mix of basic theory, scene analysis and practical exercises to explore fundamentals of character, story and structure that can be applied to developing a screenplay.
No previous experience is required other than watching movies and small screen stories.
Expected learning outcomes
In this workshop, participants will:
- Become familiar with screenplay form and format
- Examine the value of loglines, synopsis and outlines
- Develop an understanding of how genre, plot and character drive your screen story
- Practice brainstorming and writing scenes
- Analyse scenes and practice the language of constructive feedback.

Pen and paper, and/or a fully charged device.
