Explore the enchanting world of picture books with writer and editor Davina Bell. From the unique perspective of both a creator and publishing professional, Davina will share her insights on what works in a picture book manuscript, what doesn’t, and how to get your work ready for publication. Using both classic and contemporary books as our guides, we’ll look at themes and concepts that resonate, and take an overview of today’s picture book market. After considering real-life examples from the editorial, design and illustration processes, participants will uncover and develop their own ideas through writing exercises to help their picture book writing.

In this interactive and engaging workshop, participants will learn all they need to know about the author/illustrator relationship, what publishers are looking for and how to submit their work. This practical and creative session is suited to both beginner writers and those who have already begun their picture-book journey.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  1. An in-depth knowledge of the picture-book making process from concept to acquisition to final product
  2. An understanding of what makes a picture book stand out, both at submission stage and in the market
  3. Techniques for crafting an idea into a picture-book text

Participant Requirements

Pen and notebook, and a favourite picture book from childhood or today to discuss.
