This place-writing writing course with Vanessa Berry takes place on the grounds of Writing NSW in Sydney.

The encounters that writers have with places can have a powerful effect on their work. In this in-person walking and writing workshop you will learn techniques to guide your engagement with place, training your attention through observational techniques and writing exercises.

Led by expert in place-writing Vanessa Berry, the workshop will investigate Callan Park, Sydney, focussing on the layers of stories that exist within it. This writing workshop will consider time, history, ecology, and identity, how these themes are present in the physical environment, and how engaging with them through walking can shape your writing.

The workshop is suitable for writers of all levels and genres: non-fiction, fiction and poetry.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

1. Develop their understanding of the connections between experiences in place, and writing about place
2. Acquire observational techniques that enrich writing about place
3. Learn a set of writing exercises that focus attention on place.

Participant Requirements

This course takes place outdoors and involves walking: participants should be prepared to walk for around 2 hours. The walk will be conducted at a slow pace, with rest stops. Please bring a notebook and pen or pencil.

Please come prepared for the outdoors: hat, sun protection, water and practical walking shoes.
