In creative non-fiction, authors always have some presence. They can be central or secondary characters. In some instances there is no explicit ‘I’, but the authorial presence is still felt through the voice and particular interpretation of events.
In this one-day course with Lee Kofman, we’ll look at how to incorporate our own stories within the wider issues we explore, how to use the ‘Self’ when we engage with the stories and perspectives of others, how to hone our writer’s voice and how to render ourselves into compelling characters. We’ll also develop the skill to engage with research material on personal terms by using our selves, and discover how our selves can be instrumental in creating narrative drama.
Starting with a consideration of creative non-fiction theory, including the works of such iconic writers as Truman Capote, Joan Didion and Gay Talese, we’ll move on to writing exercises, discussions and practice to sharpen these skills.
Find out more about Lee’s process and work as she guest features on The First Time podcast (the hosts of which, coincidentally, will be tutoring a separate Writing NSW workshop in September, How to Podcast).
