How does a publishing house work? Ever wondered how a publisher decides whether or not to commission a work? Interested in getting feedback on your submission so you have a better chance of getting published?

On Friday 18 August 2023, Ultimo Press, an independent publisher established in 2020 with the simple ambition to become home to Australia’s best storytellers, will be in residence at Writing NSW.

Meet the team from Ultimo Press as they take you through the steps to publishing a book: from the submissions process through to editing, marketing, digital and publicity. The morning will comprise a series of panels with the Ultimo Press publishers.

In the afternoon there will be an opportunity to meet one-on-one with one of the publishers to gain invaluable feedback on your submission.

Submissions will be read by Ultimo Press prior to the day. Each one-on-one 10-minute meeting will offer constructive feedback on your submission, including advice on refining your draft, genre categorisation, appropriate length, etc.

Ultimo Press are actively seeking well-written general and literary fiction (especially the sweet spot in between), and non-fiction that inspires and ignites. Their ambition is to publish compelling new voices and original perspectives that reflect the full spectrum of Australian life.
They do accept:
– Contemporary literary fiction
– Historical fiction
– Commercial women’s fiction (from uplit to domestic noir)
– Memoir
– Narrative and literary non-fiction
– Activism and politics
– Nature and science writing
– Pop culture and criticism
– Literary thrillers
Ultimo Press encourage LGBTQIA+ and own voices submissions across all topics.
They do not accept short fiction, children’s, young adult or picture books.

Please note, you must have a completed manuscript to enrol.
