Feeling intimidated by the idea of researching your novel? Perhaps you’re delving into historical fiction for the first time, or you’re unsure of where to start finding out about your latest character’s unusual profession. This practical course will take the mystery out of research, guiding you step by step through the process – from finding inspiration, to identifying useful sources, and navigating the wild world of information including historical archives, libraries, reddit, social media, and academic journals. Finally, we’ll cover handy tips for managing the material you’ve unearthed, and ways to harness it to breathe life into your fiction.
Expected learning outcomes
In this workshop, participants will:
- Identify what research is required for their project
- Learn how to navigate a wide variety of information sources
- Learn tips and tricks for managing their material
- Learn how to incorporate research material into their project
- Undertake activities and develop skills that will be adaptable for future projects.
Participant requirements
Internet access and confidence using basic computer software are essential for this program. Please read our FAQ before enrolling.
You do not need to log into the course at a specific time and there are no live meetings. You will receive an email with an invitation link to join the online classroom by 10am on the day the course starts.
Please expect to spend a minimum of six hours on the course, noting that the amount of time needed to read, respond to discussions, write, revise and critique will vary from person to person.
- You can complete the lesson material in your own time.
- There will be assignments which have deadlines. To be guaranteed tutor feedback, you will need to complete the assignments by the deadline.
